In the hills of Calaveras County, in the Lower Rich Gulch of Paloma, California, the Gwin Mine grew from a modest strike into one of the notable gold operations of the Mother Lode. Generations of miners, engineers, and families gave their labor and their lives to the work — and in doing so built more than a mine. They built a community.
The camp brought roads, structures, schools, and steady work to families across the region. The rhythm of the mill and the headframe became the rhythm of daily life. Through booms and hard years alike, the people of the Gwin kept showing up — a testament to the strength, skill, and grit of those who came before us.
